INTERVIEW MAKER NEXT DOOR
MND : Can you introduce yourself in a few words ?
IP : I am what is currently called a neo-artisan. That is to say that I am a graduate of La Cambre and after having worked for more than 15 years in the digital world by creating my own company, I started creating crafts. With the speed at which technology evolves (I am a passionate person), and the “virtual” creation, I felt the need to find meaning in this unbridled quest. Create a product that I can smell, touch or give as a gift. Candles appeared to me naturally, because they create an atmosphere, magical moments filled with emotions. My mother used to give me a candle every year at Christmas, which must have influenced me!
MND : Can you explain your background ?
IP : I studied at La Cambre, in the “Typography & Graphic Design” section. I don’t know if we can talk about vocation in the first place. Over the years I have spent at the Abbey, I have become passionate about the letter. I was missing a dimension with the paper. So I naturally turned to digital, going through various start-ups and companies, and then created my own graphic design and digital creation company. After 15 years of good and loyal service, I decided to ease off and change course. Graphics and digital are of course still present, it is my breadcrumb trail.
MND : What made you want to start creating ?
IP : After years of intensive creation in the service of the virtual, I needed concrete creation, to put my hands in the material. Since the candle is an object that has always been present in my home, I started to learn about its manufacture. I had the need and the desire to create a beautiful object/project from A to Z, mastering each step of the creation and production process, without any compromise as to my ideal of quality.
MND : How long have you been doing this ?
IP : It has been 2 years now that I have been training myself in the art of the candle, and that I am constantly refining my product: from the website to the packaging. I have one flaw: I want everything to be perfect. Until the day I told myself that because I wanted to constantly improve the product, I would never release it. So I opened an ephemeral shop on rue Haute at the beginning of November 2018. It was an incredible experience. Sometimes there was a line in my store, I couldn’t believe it! So I signed a commercial lease in the same place.
MND : What’s your hobby on the side ?
IP : It’s hard to say because I’m passionate about everything. I can’t separate the hobbies from my daily activity. What I like to do, I always manage to turn it into a project! I have been practicing Thai boxing for more than a year, it allows me to let off steam on the one hand, to demystify someone’s “defensive” presence, and it is a fabulous school for tenacity. Every movement, however difficult it may be, eventually becomes natural because it is repeated. I transpose this teaching into my project. I know that with regularity, I can do anything. Even when you’re at the end of your rope, you still have a resource inside you.
